Translation: Chimney (smoke) of the train! What’s the mother doing? She is waking the children.

Will Saff’s (in consultation with Magugu Sithole, Pumla Majola Cohen, and other native speakers assisting with translation and cultural context) arrangement of this South African stick passing game is a treat for intermediate singers. The traditional Zulu arrangement provides opportunities for singers to learn call and response, tertiary harmonies, teamwork, and large motor skills. Plan extra time to teach and learn the stick game — it can be challenging independently and collectively, but well worth the effort. Students’ understanding of the form of the piece is necessary to apply the body percussion/stick rhythms.
