Eiliyahu Hanavi is a beautiful, traditional Hebrew melody which praises the Old Testament prophet Elijah, and reflects Jewish thought which looks toward the Messianic age and a time of peace and harmony. Kesselman provides pronunciation help for the Hebrew. The legato sections contrast with the wild, frenzied section which uses an imitation of Yiddish niggun, or wordless songs, using the word “Yai.” The lyric melody, interesting harmonies and use of the upper range for part I provide an excellent choral choice for intermediate and advanced youth choirs.
