Get out those hats and canes for this standard Irving Berlin tune from the 1940’s! Again, the melody line is full of syncopated rhythms that will need to be accented. Crisp, clean diction will be the key. The vocal harmonies are simple and straight forward, with use of unison to begin the song. There is an added bridge section that has the voices entering in layers. The basses enter last, with an answer for the other three voice parts. This is a great section to feature your basses. The bridge section has many possibilities for creative choreography. The final refrain modulates up a step and has fuller harmony. The final phrase is in unison octaves, then ending with the singers whispering “Steppin’!” This arrangement is great for any age choir.
