Written for the local male ensemble Cantus, Jennings’ score is not for the faint of heart. It is a well-crafted, very difficult score to perform well. Do not let that information stop you from taking a look at it! It is at once broad and expansive, then slips into a soft, reflective style. Top tenor voices need a strong high A, low basses need a firm low E. There are moments of five and seven-part chords, but for the most part the piece is in four parts. It is a dramatic work that uses jagged dynamic shifts and articulation as its means to portray the mood and characterizations. Though published separately, this piece pairs with Jennings’ “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”. Take a serious look at both pieces.
