This Irish ballad, arranged and adapted by Stephen Hatfield, is set for unaccompanied SSA voices. It’s set in a lilting 9/8 meter as it tells the story of a young maid whose love is lost in war, and she’s left behind to mourn him in Bonny Wood Green. The beautiful unison melody of verse one is expanded upon in the succeeding verses with a variety of harmonic settings. When I did this piece with my women, I altered the voicing on some of the verses, so as to give the altos a chance to sing melody, and they were able to handle it beautifully. Another true winner.
