Broskvicka (The Little Peach) by Czech composer Ctirad Kohoutek, won first prize at the 1994 International Composer’s Competition in Jihlava. The text is a ballad to the “little peach” which illuminates the night and shines over one’s life until death intervenes. A transliteration of the Czech text along with an English translation is provided in the score. Dense harmonies are combined with intensely articulated triplet figures in fiery exchanges between piano/percussion (triangle, tambourine and suspended cymbal) and choir. An expressivo, multi-metered section for a cappella chorus is followed by a recapitulation of the opening material for a highly dramatic conclusion.
