If you have a small group of good musicians that want to work hard and have fun, this is the piece. This Real Group chart has been a staple in vocal jazz programs around the world. It seems only right to include a vocal jazz piece of Swedish descent, here in the land of Scandanavian descent! This chart has three women’s parts, with an emphasis on the lower two female voices. The usual tenor/bass split is written. After a rhythmic introduction, the soprano 1, tenor and bass parts turn to vocal percussion. Don’t let that scare you off…you just need to listen to the Real Group recording a few (hundred) times. Actually, the vocal percussion parts are imitating shakers, with the vocal bass on the instrumental double bass part. The most interesting section of the piece is the middle part, where you will find full vocal percussion for all voices. You will find a few key changes throughout the piece, but on repetative material. Once you can get the syllables under your tongue, the piece will sing itself. Don’t fool yourself that it is too difficult for your students; it will take some work, but it is well worth it. Audiences love it and your students will rise to the challenge.
