Ms. Hill has set this key gospel verse of John 3:16 for SATB choir and piano. The piano provides an esoteric accompaniment that compliments, but does not mimic the choir. Although not terribly difficult, it is sophisticated in harmonic structure, moving from e minor to end on a beautiful A major chord. She captures the awe of the magnitude of Christ’s gift in dying for us by creating a harmonic structure that is not trite. At the end on the text, should not perish but have everlasting life, Edie writes a tempo marking: Sublime, like a flower blooming. This is exactly what the music does. The range is not extreme in any voice. I recommend this for any size choir wanting to try something a little different yet powerful.
