John Rutter has selected eleven Gregorian chants in this wonderful collection. A number of the chants will be familiar to choral musicians, including Hodie Christus natus est (as quoted by Britten in A Ceremony of Carols), Pangue lingua, and the Easter Sequence (Victimae Pascali laudes). Though Rutter indicates SATB voicings throughout, there is no reason that these chants could not be performed by men alone. Chants in our choir rehearsals are a wonderful way to teach concepts such as unison singing and phrasing, and they provide us an opportunity to revisit one of the oldest forms of singing. These chants can be performed alone, in a small group, or in a large choir setting. Also included are wonderful editorial notes and translations.
