Full of interesting bird sounds, overtone singing and an instrument created by Australian composer Sarah Hopkins called a “whirly,” this piece is an immediate audience pleaser. The piece is in ABCA form. There are options for both an 8-minute and a 4-minute performance. The piece can be sung a cappella or with any combination of the given instrumentation.

This piece allows your choir to experiment vocally with making sounds of the earth (rainforest, birds, etc.) and to play with overtone singing. The sound of the “whirlies” as they are swung in circular motion adds to the Australian flavor of the piece and students jump at the chance to play them. I ordered the whirlies directly from Sarah Hopkins (www.sarahhopkins.com). If you know a didgeridoo player, there is a part for that as well. Northwest Girlchoir has a wonderful recording on both Youtube and their CD “Heart and Soul.” Sarah Hopkins also has a recording on her CD “Honour the Earth.” If you order the music from her directly she will send you a CD of her music for free.
