This setting of the G.F. Chesterton text to its English traditional tune has the feel of an art song for women’s voices. The piano preludes and interludes give it both a gentle carol lilt and its “art song” personality. The writing for women (up to four voices divisi with optional solo or small group) is idiomatically sound. This strophic setting includes a verse for solo or chorus unison. It begins with a simple opening in unison and opens into beautiful four-part writing. The mood of the haunting melody is expertly captured.
