Here Branvik has crafted a sensitive setting of the hauntingly beautiful 16th century French folk-song “Une Jeune Pucelle.” The text is said to be the earliest Canadian carol in existance and is attributed by tradition to Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit priest. The opening features the men in unison, eventually growing into warm harmony with the entire choir. There are precise stylistic markings that are a delight to teach and sing. There is some easy bass divisi early on, and the ending, while challenging, is quite accessible. This is not a selection to introduce to your choir at the last minute, but it is worth the investment of careful work and study.
