This song first appeared on a recording produced by Erik Hillstad entitled “Lullabies from the Axis of Evil.” This arrangement employs a cello obbligato to imitate the sound of an Iraqi oud – a pear-shaped stringed instrument similar to a bowl-backed guitar. “The song is a cry for peace in the world, in my country, for my children.” It uses both English and Arabic texts. A recording is available at www.sbmp.com of the Grand Rapids Women’s Chorus, conducted by Lori Tennenhouse. There are several discrepancies between the score transliteration and the recording. Ms. Tennenhouse’s choices seem much more consistent and logical. The voice parts sit very low for the female voice, but it is a rich, evocative, earthy melodic line that my girls have loved singing – a truly powerful piece.
