“Ye’ll take the high road an’ I’ll take the low road, and I’ll be in Scotland afore ye.” According to the arranger, this song is most likely a tale about two of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s men, captured and left behind in 1745. One is to be executed, while the other is to be set free. According to Celtic tradition, the condemned man’s spirit would return to his homeland via the “low road”: his spirit will reach Scotland before his comrade gets home, but he will never meet his true love again. After the opening solo draws in the listener, the men’s section followed by the women’s section tell the story in legato homophonic choral writing. The melody is painted next over a slow march-like section depicting the soldier’s hard march home. After a return of the tenor voice singing of a “second spring,” there is a surge in tempo bringing a lighter feel to the journey home.
