The “Wind Band Mass” is Haydn’s last great composition, and the work is full of daring technical, coloristic, and harmonic effects. The “Kyrie” brings to mind the great “Adagios” of the late symphonies; the “Benedictus” is a great surprise, however, and it would prove a delightful anthem for Advent, Palm Sunday, or Communion (given a capable pianist). The “Dona Nobis Pacem” is positively triumphant, and it is a fitting conclusion to the compositional output of this musical giant. The “Wind Band Mass” is Haydn’s last great composition, and the work is full of daring technical, coloristic, and harmonic effects.
