This brand-new work, to be premiered by Choral Arts Ensemble in March (2001), is a setting of Prospero’s “Our revels are now ended” speech from Shakespeare’s Tempest. Beginning with a lilting Lydian inflection, it expands to nine parts at “the cloud-capped towers,” then slowly settles back, as the text directs, as “our little life is rounded with a sleep.” The Lydian motive returns, wordlessly at the conclusion, and the texture evaporates from eleven parts to only five women’s voices, gently wafting into thin air. It’s not as hard as some works Carol (composer-in-residence to the Dale Warland Singers) has written, but the dissonances and divisi present substantial growth opportunities, shall we say. And well worth it! Duration about 5 minutes.
