More advanced choirs may enjoy working on this variant of “Sometimes I Fell Like a Motherless Child.” The unexpected differences in the text allow the listener to truly pay attention to the progression of the prose from despondency to hope. The music follows this idea, changing from minor to major. The intensity of the choral and percussion parts increases throughout before ending silently. Requiring good intonation and rhythmic accuracy, this piece is most powerful when performed without a conductor.
