For collegiate and adult male choruses, Tormis has composed a very dramatic work that incorporates chant-like melodies with full-throated expression. The texts come from runic songs about the sea, with texts from Haljala, Kuusalu, Ridala, and Muhu in Estonia. Low bass is given soli passages below chanting accompaniments from baritone and tenor. You need strong tenor soloists for the middle section where various voices sing from different locations in the choir. The difficult part of this piece is in learning the texts. They are a mouthful for the soloists, yet very manageable for the choral parts. Tormis is one of Europe’s more original voices today, and this is a great opportunity to learn his work.
