This forgotten Renaissance gem will delight choirs of varying abilities. Esquivel, a relatively unknown 16th century composer, poignantly set this powerful Passion text utilizing close points of imitation akin to Josquin or Palestrina. This work is a wonderful tool for teaching solfege to your choir due to the imitative, stepwise voice leading. If you are looking for a lesser-known Renaissance motet, I highly recommend this piece.
