Generally, settings of Rainer Maria Rilke don’t fall under the Ethnic & Multicultural category, but this setting, using a combination of standard and avant garde notation, is an exception. Individual lines of the rather simple text are interspersed with effects provided by wind chimes, orchestral bass drum, chuink-chok (a high pitched, percussive rattle) and triangle. Using aleatoric lines, tone clusters and spoken word, this setting is for the ensemble looking to broaden their view of contemporary music. Although written for four-part treble, it could be sung by any combination of voices.
