A setting of Walt Whitman’s text of the same name, this selection presents significant challenges for moderately advanced men’s choirs. Its sweeping phrases are set homophonically in big, blustery chords in somewhat static harmony. A cappella sections alternate with those accompanied by obligato flugelhorn. Whitman’s poetry lends itself to various concert themes and also provides a foundation for an impressive cross-disciplinary unit on text analysis.
