Sahayta grew out of a performing ensemble of international students at Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa. In creating a name for the ensemble, members contributed words in their language that had connections with peace, cooperation, music, etc. The name “Sahayta” (Sanskrit meaning helpfulness) was chosen, and the remaining words were used to create a call and response song. While the call and response sections are easily learned, the short refrain contains tight harmonies in thirds that layer in very logically and musically. This piece can also work perfectly to encourage audience participation in both singing and rhythmic clapping. With a short rehearsal, the audience will begin to lose their inhibitions and turn the concert into a “happening.” Adding the rhythmic clapping keeps singers and audiences alike on their toes! This is just one of many call and response songs from Ben Allway’s “Singing and the Culture of Peace” choral festivals. (Moderate)
