Sail Away is an original American banjo/fiddle tune. In addition to the hammered dulcimer, this piece comes alive by adding a strong fiddle player. Much of the piece is in unison. Although the piece moves into four parts for each chorus, the chord progressions are straightforward and the patterns in the piece are easily learned and connected.

I have used Sail Away as an end of the year closer. The text speaks of hope for the future and readiness to move on to the next stage of life. Teaching the piece in small sections and then connecting them makes for quick study. Malcolm Dalglish has a good recording of the piece on his CD entitled “Pleasure.”
