A great closer for beginning women’s or children’s choirs, this piece from the Torres Strait Islands takes the folk melody and adds a harmonization on each of the three repeats. Percussion accompaniment by the warup, lumut, and go (described in the score) add a sense of motion and excitement. Directions are also included for traditional movement to accompany the singing.

The piece consists of two melodies. The soprano harmonizes the melody using mostly parallel thirds above, and the altos have a prominent “so – do” pattern throughout. I have had my entire choir learn all three parts and then choose whichever they would like as we discuss balance and harmony. The included movement suggestions help singers engage with the character of the piece and the percussion parts can give students added opportunities to experiment with rhythm.
