The poem is written by Lord Byron (1788-1824) and Barnum’s setting won the 2003 Chanticleer student choral composition competition. A delicate, rubato duet by the women begins the piece, followed by the tenor entrance, which gently opens up the harmony. The piece unfolds into four-part texture, with occasional short divisi in the bass and soprano. While diatonic, the harmonic language is fresh and compelling. Moderate ranges and expert voice leading, mixed with expressive elements that invite one through the piece, make this elegant work a joy to rehearse and perform.
