Sohran Bushi is an energetic arrangement of a Japanese folk song which describes the life of a young fisherman, his dialogue with the seagulls and breakers, the girl he might marry and the simplicity of his life. The song is strophic in nature with both homophonic and imitative passages linked by a recurring refrain of “Yasa e yasa no dokkoisho!” An underlying rhythmic motive of “Sohran, Hai, Hai!” recalls the movement of waves and casting of nets and supports the more Iyric and liquid melodic lines of each verse.
