The foreword of this setting makes mention that this tune’s popularity has led to performances by Sinead O’Connor, Van Morrison, and the Chieftains. A lot of our students may have never heard of any of those musicians, but it makes a strong statement about the universality of this Irish song. Hunt’s arrangement is very attractive to high school and collegiate male choirs. It is accompanied and teatures solo and soli sections. The voicing in the choral part writing is two to four parts. Hunt uses smooth voice leading to make these lines very nice to sing. The score starts rather simply, builds some tension in the middle, and ends quite broadly. It is a score that young men will enjoy singing, as success is a strong guarantee.
