From “The Civil War: An American Musical”
This stunning arrangement tells the story of a soldier whose dying wish is for his loved ones to be proud of him for being brave and strong in the face of war and death. Beautiful melodic lines are supplemented by stunning harmonies and long phrases that foster a reflective sense of simplicity that is contrasted by the dramatic sadness of saying goodbye in the final moments of the soldier’s life. A truly exceptional and moving song!
Vocal ranges of this work begin to stretch the upper transitions of the tenor voice as well as the lower ranges for basses so teaching singers to produce a relaxed and free tone is key. The baritone part fits comfortably in the middle, allowing new and less-experienced baritones to find their part easily within the overall structure of the piece. Basses and baritones are often tasked with singing the melody, placing the responsibility of singing harmony with the tenors and demanding a higher level of accountability and focus on the part of young tenors who have voices yet unchanged or who haven’t experienced anything except the melody. Finally, this is a terrific song to help young singers in TTBB ensembles explore their own abilities to be emotional and expressive singers.
