When I heard this song performed in San Antonio at our most recent national convention, I knew I had to have it. Randall Stroope has again created a materpiece for women’s choirs with this lovely setting of the traditonal 15th Century text. The melody is basically a descending scale, with a lower octave pedal in the alto section. This is elaborated on in the next verse as the first soprano moves up the scale, while the second soprano and alto take on the melody. Meanwhile the piano and oboe (I used flute, which worked wonderfully) accompaniments add beautifully, almost as two more vocal parts. Stroope’s musical treatment of the final “Alleluia” is just as gorgeous as the rest of the piece. This requires a bit of vocal maturity, again because of the tessitura and length of lines.
